In July 2017, a selected group of 15 qualified educators from various high schools and educational institutions across Canada participated in the annual CSYV Holocaust Scholarship Program and attended the International Seminar for Educators on the Holocaust at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem. Over the 19-day seminar, educators learned from world-renowned experts in Holocaust studies how to best teach about the Holocaust to students.
Highlights from the program included:
· Talk from Professor Jeremy Cohen from Tel Aviv University, “Jews, Judaism and Anti-Judaism in the Ancient World”
· Shabbat Service at the Great Synagogue
· Talk from Professor Yehuda Bauer, “Current Issues in Holocaust Education and Research: The Unprecedentedness of the Holocaust in an Age of Genocide”
· Talk from Herb Keinon, Jerusalem Post, “The Problems Facing Israel Today”
The 2017 recipients were awarded to educators in five provinces, and included university department heads, high-school teachers and middle-school teachers, from private and public schools.
